6 ways to create the illusion of higher ceilings

Will Sheils August 9, 2024

High ceilings may be on your must haves list for your dream home, but it may not always be at the top of your list. Creating the look and open feel of high ceilings can be done with a few tricks. We have those tricks up our sleeve and are sharing them with you! Keep reading to see 9 ways you can create the illusion of high ceilings in your home.

Light paint colors

As much as deep and dark tones can create a beautiful and moody space, they may not be the best choice for every room in your home. Using dark colors throughout a small space can make the ceiling feel and appear lower than it truly is. Using light paint colors can create an airy and open feel in your space that makes it seem like the ceiling is further away than it truly is.

Hanging curtains and window treatments high

Most curtains and other window treatments are hung close to the framing around a window. By taking the curtain up higher (a few inches from the ceiling) can make the walls appear longer and your ceilings higher. Installing curtains that are pretty much floor to ceiling lengthens your space and makes your ceiling feel further from your reach.

Utilize vertical stripes in the design

Just like adding vertical stripes to your wardrobe can make you look taller, the same concept works with your walls. There are many ways you can add vertical stripes to your home. One way to add stripes is choosing curtains that have a vertical striped pattern. Better ways to add stripes to your home design is right on to your walls. Utilizing a vertical striped wallpaper is a great way to utilize striped wallpaper in your space. Adding wallpaper can add a personal touch to your home. With the multitude of wallpaper options, you are sure to find the perfect one for your project and your style. Wallpaper may not be your cup of tea, but you still want a pattern on your walls. Hand painting vertical stripes can add the illusion of high ceilings without the use of wallpapers.

Add crown moulding

Crown moulding is a subtle way to hide the transition from wall to ceiling making your walls appear taller than that truly are. Crown is the moulding that sits at the very top of your walls. Adding this feature can add extra character to your home while also adding the illusion of higher ceilings. Since the moulding removes the sharp corner from wall to ceiling, it makes the ceiling look further away than it really is.

Add vertical paneling or wall framing

Vertical paneling like shiplap or beadboard is another way to lengthen your walls. This is similar to adding striped wall paper with creating the continuous vertical lines but using different materials. The idea of adding this type of paneling to your wall is to make the walls look longer than they are. Adding picture frame molding to your walls can also lengthen your walls. Using this detail can add to the illusion of higher ceilings while adding character to your space.

Color Drenching

Color drenching your space is a great way to create the illusion of high ceilings. Painting your walls, trim, doors, and ceiling the same color can make your walls look longer since it is hard to see where the wall ends and ceiling begins.

Using one of these tricks, or a few paired together can make your low ceilings feel like they are out of reach. One of these tricks may be the change you need to make to the home the is almost your dream home. Let us know which details you want to add to your next home project!
